Editing
As a part of an editing class, I worked with the Missouri State University-Springfield Supplemental Instruction Director to edit the Supplemental Instruction Faculty Guide. The guide was intended to explain to faculty the Supplemental Instruction program, a subject-based tutoring program. To edit this guide, I used the JET Propulsion Levels of Edit (see below).
Original SI Faculty Guide vs. Final SI Faculty Guide
Process: JET Propulsion Levels of Edit
The JET Propulsion Levels of Edit is a formalized editing system that involves breaking down the editing process into a series of stages, each focusing on a separate set of issues. While working on the Supplemental Instruction Faculty Guide, I cycled through the following editing stages:
- Substantive Edit
- I checked for coherence, organization, and complete ideas. I also added missing parts like tables of contents, title pages, and other major parts. In essence, I made any large scale changes to the item in question at this time. To see this edit, view the Substantive Edit PDF.
- Technical Edit
- In this stage, editors check for accuracy in any math figures or scientific notations. This particular document didn't have any, so I skipped this step.
- Language Edit
- I then looked at grammar and mechanics. To see this edit, view the Language Edit PDF.
- Format Edit
- Next, I edited for consistent layout including fonts, colors, heading hierarchy, chart and graph design, and spacing. To see this edit, view the Format Edit PDF.
- Integrity Edit
- Afterwards, I made sure that all parts of the text match, including in-text references to charts and graphs, table of contents with page numbers. I also also checked that all phone numbers, email addresses, and web addresses work. To see this edit, view the Integrity Edit PDF.
- Proofreading Edit
- Finally, while not a part of the JET Propulsion Levels of Edit, I looked over the entire document for anything I may have missed in earlier edits using a new set of editing marks. To see this edit, view the Proofreading Edit PDF.
Style Guide
Based on the formatting and editing choices I made while going through the levels of edit, I developed the SI Style Guide to allow my client to alter the SI Faculty Guide.
Index
As the final step in the editing process, I compiled an index of the most commonly used terms in the SI Faculty Guide.
